I can’t really think of a better woman to celebrate today than my mama, Gloria Montoya.

5 years ago, we wrote a record about her and her insano-inspiring life, and thought it perhaps appropriate to post the album’s closer today.

It’s a simple little ditty called Lullaby (Mountain) and was sung with heart-eviscerating care by our dear friend Casey Mecija from Ohbijou.

Written from Gloria’s mom’s perspective (who died during labour), it was meant as a dying wish/mantra for the daughter she’d never get to meet.

So today, on International Women’s Day, take that minute you’d use to think of a witty fb status update and think fondly on whatever gifts large or small your mater imparted on you. She’s a special lady, and likely cares about you more than you’ll ever understand. Take THAT Hallmark. PEACE.

Revisiting: Make The Least Of The Day / week 1 / FOUR TET

At the start of our 2010 fall tour, we released a sweet little compilation called MAKE THE LEAST OF THE DAY, a reinterpretation of our No Ghost album.

We were treated and honoured by some outstanding re-jigging and re-invention by friends and mentors featuring: Chad VanGaalen, Sandro Perri, Snailhouse, Jokers Of The Scene, Lake, Megafaun, Born Ruffians, Diamond Rings, Ohbijou, FOUR TET and Woodpigeon.

I put on this comp last weekend and got to thinking that this little comp could have had a bit more love upon it’s initial release, so here we are.

So every Friday, and for the next 11 weeks, we’ll be featuring the folks that made this comp shed some light.

Week 1: FOUR TET / Restoration

Back in the summer of 2002, The Acorn’s first guitarist, the artist Howie Tsui and I initially bonded over a slew of early-21st century avant-garde electro pop: the Morr Music label, Manitoba, The Books, and the wizardry of London/Oxford’s Kieran Hebden.

FOUR TET’s brand of electro is deeply musical, often whimsical and ever-evolving; he always manages to tell an engaging story with his deceptively intricate compositions. We were deeply honoured to have No Ghost’s first single Restoration re-imagined by FOUR TET. Enjoy, and see you next week!

Exclaim.ca premieres long-lost video for MISPLACED:

Almost a year after it was shot, we recently unearthed our video for Misplaced from our 2010 album, No Ghost.

It was shot in late-February in Sandbanks Provincial Park by Graham Rapsey.

Misplaced was one of our favourite songs from the No Ghost sessions, so we’re happy to share this whimsical little ditty about love and sexy-times here once again.
